LAKELAND - Of all the unique landmarks that exist in communities across the Lakeland – from Glendon’s larger-than-life perogy, to Elk Point’s Peter Fidler statue – it was the UFO landing pad in St. Paul that was voted as the best landmark in the Lakeland, according to this year’s Lakeland’s Best contest.
Being recognized as the best landmark is “a testament to the creativity and vision that first put St. Paul on the tourism map,” says Town of St. Paul Mayor Maureen Miller.
“The Landing Pad continues to draw attention because it’s unique - a symbol that welcomes everyone. We embrace that theme of inclusivity, whether through tourism promotion or events like our seasonal artisan market. Over the years, many prominent dignitaries have stopped by to take a photo here, which only adds to its charm and history,” says Miller.
The Lakeland’s Best contest, organized by Lakeland This Week/LakelandTODAY, included several new categories in its second year running, including the Best Landmark category. Readers were encouraged to vote for their favourite businesses, groups – or landmarks – in a long list of categories.
The UFO landing pad, located on St. Paul’s main street, has been in place since Canada’s centennial in 1967.
In honour of Canada’s centennial year, a proposal was made to build what would be the world’s first UFO landing pad. It was intended as a permanent way to show the community was welcoming to everyone. A plaque is in place near the stairs of the landing pad that states “All visitors from Earth or otherwise are welcome to this territory and to the Town of St. Paul.”
The one-of-a-kind project received federal funding and during the grand opening on June 3, 1967, St. Paul was declared the Centennial Capital of Canada.
In 1990, an information centre was opened near the landing pad. Visitors can still purchase souvenirs and even browse through some out-of-this-world information about UFOs when they visit the popular landmark.
