ST. PAUL – Five years ago, when members of the St. Paul Curling Club learned that some of their own were battling cancer, it inspired members to start what has become an annual funspiel fundraiser in support of Haying in the 30’s Cancer Support Society.
Haying in the 30’s provides financial assistance to those who have been diagnosed with cancer, helping pay for costs such as travel and accommodation when attending medical appointments in the city, for example.
Years later, the effort is still going strong, as the club hosted its fifth annual fundraiser on Nov. 23, raising $2,950 through the event. Since the fundraiser’s inception, the club raised over $15,000 for Haying in the 30’s.
TJ Wagner, general manager at the curling club, said the funspiel is more of a recreational event with the goal of bringing families and the community together - while raising money for a good cause.
“[Cancer] is close to a lot of people . . . We just felt it was important to give back,” said Wagner, thanking everyone who came out to support the event, as well as businesses who provided donations for the event’s auctions, raffles, and prizes.
Coming up next for the club is the Men’s Open to be held from Jan. 10 to 12, and the 3 Wheeler funspiel on Feb. 7 and 8.
