ST. PAUL - A new summer school in St. Paul has attracted more registrants than expected, according to an update provided at the June 14 St. Paul Education board meeting.

Assistant Superintendent Keith Gamblin provided an update to the board of trustees, stating that within about a week of opening registration, there were already 55 students signed up "in a variety of subjects." The summer school is set to run throughout most of the month of July.

While most of the students do come from within the St. Paul Education region, there are a handful of students taking part who are outside the division, reported Gamblin.

He noted a lot of hard work was done by staff at St. Paul Alternate Education Centre (SPAEC) in a short amount of time. The summer school will be run out of SPAEC, which is located at the St. Paul Regional High School building.

The registrations for the newly formed summer school have already "exceeded expectations," according to Gamblin. He noted that the school is now advertising for an additional teacher. He noted many of the teachers initially on board had backgrounds in English and Social Studies but many of the students have signed up to take math and science classes.

A six-credit computer course is also being offered to students, and those who complete the course earn themselves a new Chromebook, which is proving to also be a popular option.

Speaking to the summer school's early registration success, board chair Sylvie Smyl said she feels the school will be "a positive opportunity for our students."
