Cowboys and cowgirls from across the province gathered for the 51st annual Stoney Lake Stampede on July 6 and 7.

The Stampede saw competitors take part in 11 different events, featuring riders from the Pee Wee to professional levels. Food and camping were available to guests, along with a dance Saturday night.

Competitors came from all over the province, from St. Paul and Two Hills, to Airdrie, Drayton Valley, and Peace River. One competitor even came from as far as New Zealand.

On Sunday afternoon things slowed down for a while due to a heavy downpour and what sounded like the beginnings of a thunderstorm, but that didn’t put an end to the rodeo, and competitors started back up as soon as the rain let up.

“It was a good one,” says Brent Galloway, director at large of the Lakeland Rodeo Association. “There were lots of good entries, and a good turnout with a lot of people showing up. There was a good dance on Saturday night, and we had good stock competing.”

Rodeo Administrator Susan Early agrees saying, “I thought it went well and that it was a busy weekend.”

She adds, “We had four rodeos in total, in the area, on the weekend – one in Hairy Hill, one in Stoney Lake, one in Goodfish Lake, and one at Clover Lodge in Viking. We had lots of entries, and lots of participants trying to get to all four rodeos. All in all, it was a lot of travelling and work in the office leading up to it.”
