After having her home watched by an unknown vehicle two nights last month, 72-year-old Gladys Ternovoy has been left feeling disappointed in the justice system.
“They are not protecting the innocent, they are instead protecting the guilty,” Ternovoy told a crowd of about 300 people, Tuesday night at the St. Paul Rec. Centre. “Our people are losing millions of dollars off their property and I’m not happy.”
Candace Achtymichuk, who works in the community and has property in the area, says she was left feeling violated after losing about $100,000 worth of property as a result of property theft and crime.
The individual, who robbed her property four years ago was charged with over 30 offences, but got off “scot-free.” The same individual robbed her nine months later.
Alberta’s Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer says the justice system has failed residents in rural communities. The minister was in St. Paul on Tuesday as part of a rural crime town hall tour that is making its way across the province.
“Expect decisive action from us before Christmas,” Schweitzer told the crowd.
