We were recently visiting friends in the area and they encouraged us to attend Haying in the 30s in Mallaig this past weekend. What an amazing event - not only the cause which the event supports but just the overall spirit of community that was so apparent. The mere logistics of organizing such an undertaking is mind-boggling. We understand that about 300 volunteers work to make the weekend a success and that all supplies, food, and services are donated by businesses and individuals.
Having served on various fundraising committees over the years, we recognize the challenge in lining up volunteers willing to help wherever needed but to have so many volunteers speaks volumes about the community-mindedness of folks in this area. The weekend was so well-planned and things seemed to run smoothly (at least from the outside looking in). The grounds were well-maintained and set up so effectively that even with the huge number in attendance nothing seemed crowded. The schedule was arranged so that if you missed one demonstration while watching another, you had a chance to see it later in the day.
The steady stream of horse-drawn wagons hauling people through fields and the bush was so well-received and enjoyed by everyone. It takes so much effort on the part of the teamsters to travel to the event with their horses and wagon, groom, harness and hitch the team, answer the many questions that folks have, unharness at day's end and care for the horses - all to provide rides for people. With 45 wagons in the parade, that means over 100 horses on the grounds! We also enjoyed all the musicians who entertained throughout the day as well as those who prepared and served such wonderful meals.
It was such a treat to attend such a great family-oriented event and we came away with so many great memories. Hats off to each and every one who helped with Haying in the 30s - on behalf of all those in attendance, we say a heartfelt “Thank you!&”
