The St. Paul Education Regional Division seat left vacant by Subdivision E trustee Rhea Looy had no takers as of nomination day, Sept. 18, but Town of S.t Paul councillor Dwight Wiebe filed nomination papers early last week and was acclaimed as the candidate.
“I saw there was a vacancy and I was very concerned,” said Wiebe, adding he felt it was an important time to be part of school board discussion, particularly with amendments proposed to the School Act and provincial government discussions around that. However, generally speaking, he said he felt that education was an important matter in the community, and that Subdivision E needed to be represented.
Wiebe will continue to run to regain his seat on Town of St. Paul council; people may run for both school board and municipal office, and fellow school board trustee Lorne Young is in fact running for Elk Point’s mayoral chair.
As for juggling both responsibilities, should he be elected to town council, Wiebe said, “I certainly can handle both of them, and look forward to the challenge.”
Wiebe joins incumbent trustees Young, Heather Starosielski and Deb Pederson as acclaimed.
Elections will be held October 16, 2017 in Subdivision C, Subdivision D and the Glen Avon Ward.
