The Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority has upgraded a Fire Advisory to a Fire Restriction effective May 2, 2023.

BONNYVILLE – Effective of May 2, the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA) has upgraded a Fire Advisory to a Fire Restriction.

The Fire Restriction is in effect for the MD of Bonnyville, the Summer Village of Bonnyville Beach, Summer Village of Pelican Narrows and the Village of Glendon.

The upgrade in fire status means existing fire permits are suspended, and no new fire permits will be issued, according to the BRFA.

Burn Barrels or pits are not permitted during a Fire Restriction. However, compliant fire pits, and safe campfires are permitted in designated campgrounds, day use areas or on privately owned land.

There are currently 42 active wildfires in the province, according to the Alberta Wildfire Status Dashboard on May 2. Of those, two are considered out of control.

Lighting was listed as the cause of three of the current fires, 14 of the fires have been determined to be human caused, while 25 fires remain under investigation.

For daily updates or changes on fire statuses visit www.albertafirebans.ca.

“We expect this fire restriction to reduce the number of human-caused wildfires in Alberta, while allowing Albertans to enjoy outdoor activities as much as possible,” states the BRFA.
