Get ready to be exposed to a whole new world of games.
The Lakeland Multicultural Association is hosting their first Games from Near and Far, an event geared towards introducing local families to sports and games from around the globe.
On June 30, the Cold Lake Energy Centre will be a whirlwind of activities with three areas for participants to choose from.
The first is the competition level.
”People submit teams and they compete against each other in the sports, based on the standings, the teams will come out in first, second, and third,” explained event organizer and board member for the Lakeland Multicultural Association Kunal Jadav.
There are eight sports to choose from: cricket, sumo wrestling, soccer, piddu, tipi raising, kickball, ball hockey, and kabaddi.
Jadav said teams must sign up by June 14 by reaching out to the hosting organization.
For those who aren’t into sports but still want to take part, there’s an opportunity to join a board game or indoor activity.
Similar to the competition-side of the event, the indoor games are all “specific to other cultures,” with a few recognizable additions such as connect four.
The final portion of Games from Near and Far is the group games.
“We get volunteers from different communities to show some friendly games that they would play in their gatherings,” explained Jadav.
All of the programs are free and take place from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
“This is our first year holding it. We were looking at the different ways other cultures intersect and what makes the different cultures accessible to other people. I thought with June being recreation month… there are lots of inter-country aspects that go on in sports,” Jadav expressed, adding he encourages everyone to stop by to watch or take part in the event.
“By coming out and participating, it encourages organizations like ours to put more events on like this.”
