A family dispute that took a turn for the worst and a later domestic assault will have one man spending 150 days behind bars.

On Dec. 18, 2018, Bonnyville RCMP responded to multiple complaints about a disturbance in town involving a white Chevy Impala chasing another vehicle.

The male and female inside of the vehicle were yelling and arguing with family members.

Their interaction eventually moved from the Sobey's parking lot, to 47 Ave.

It was at that point that the male driving the Impala got out of the vehicle, climbed onto the second car involved, and jumped on the hood, causing damage.

The male climbed back into his vehicle containing his wife and one-year-old daughter and fled the scene.

RCMP responded to the area and were told by witnesses the direction the car had fled.

According to Crown prosecutor Tyler McLean, the accused had also texted his wife's step-father, threatening to beat him up.

A few months later, on Feb. 6, police were called to a domestic dispute involving the accused in the Dec. 18 incident.

The female reported her husband had punched her in the face several times.

Officers arrived and found the woman had sustained injuries to her face. Her lip was swollen, her mouth was bleeding, and there was bruising.

After some persuasion, the woman went to the hospital.

The 32-year-old accused appeared in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse on Tuesday, May 28, where he pleaded guilty to mischief to property, uttering threats, assault causing bodily harm, and failing to comply with a probation order.

A victim impact statement provided by the female, described how the incident traumatized her.

"It traumatized both of us," said the accused. "I'm very sorry and I never wanted her to feel like that, ever."

Honourable Judge Kathleen Williams sentenced the male to 150 days in custody. As of his sentencing, he had 12 days remaining.

Williams also required him to provide a sample of his DNA for the national databank, and sentenced him to a five-year weapons prohibition.

Due to the domestic nature of the assault, and to protect the identity of the victim, the name of the accused will not be published.
