BONNYVILLE - The newly established Glendon Library has requested funding to help support its efforts, which was recently approved by the MD of Bonnyville.

The request came forward during the May 14 MD of Bonnyville council meeting. Council decided that the Northern Lights Library system, in charge of disseminating provincial funds for libraries within the MD, would include the Glendon library, relocating 10 per cent of the Bonnyville Library's funds.

The Glendon Library was granted the full $20,000 requested, with the MD supporting a contribution of $12,925.85 from cash flow reserves.

Glendon Library board member Noreen Cotton said that considering the reduced funding the Bonnyville Library would experience due to the relocation of funds to the Glendon Library, there was a meeting held between the libraries prior to the council meeting.

“It was such a positive meeting. They are so happy to have another library on board,” says Cotton.

Bonnyville library Manager Nicole Labrie also spoke to the mutual support, saying, “We took them for a tour around our library, and offered our support as much as we can.”

Labrie believes the budget cuts are well worth it, if it means providing more libraries in the region, and people from Glendon travelling to Bonnyville for library service can now support their own library.

“The biggest goal is just to have library service in as many towns, villages, and places as possible,” says Labrie.

Cotton also relayed the sentiments of Glendon Library Chair Joanne Cooper, stating it is about the bigger picture, which is getting more people to read and expanding resources.
