Runners and walkers will be met with a rainbow of colours in support of a Bonnyville school.
H.E. Bourgoin Middle School is hosting their second annual Fantastic Fun Colour Run on Friday, June 7, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Vonda Worthman, Grade 6 teacher and co-organizer, said they're hoping to build off the success of last year's event.
"We had over 250 people register. It was quite the rainy day, not what we wanted, but it actually turned out great because it didn't dampen anyone's spirits," she exclaimed.
Cheryl Edwards, school librarian and co-organizer, added, "Even though the weather didn't cooperate... all of the feedback was positive. There was a couple of... suggestions that could make it run smoother, but all of the participants had fun."
The event is organized by H.E.B.'s student leadership class, who were looking to bring residents together for a fun afternoon.
"They wanted something to promote community spirit and physical activity," noted Edwards. "A mud run was too labour intensive, so when they did their research that was kind of why they picked the colour run."
Participants will be given colour run bags when they register the day of, which will include a white t-shirt. They will leave H.E.B. on a five-kilometre trek down to the Jessie Lake Trail, passing through various colour stations on the way. Sponsor groups will be tossing different colours onto runners and walkers as they go.
"We've had mixed reviews whether the colour actually comes out or whether it stays. Maybe (don't wear) your best running shoes," advised Edwards.
Once they're covered from head-to-toe, participants can head back to the school where Worthman says they're planning to have activities set up for families.
Organizers are hoping to surpass last year's 250 registrants, and want to sell out of the 300 race kits this time around.
All of the money raised from the event will be put towards H.E.B. attending the WE Day Leadership Conference in Edmonton on Oct. 22.
"Last year, we were able to send those kids to WE Day at no cost, and we're hoping to do the same this year," expressed Worthman.
Edwards added, "The more successful we are, the more students we can send to the WE Day Leadership Conference. When we see them come back from that, the maturity and confidence is unbelievable in them. You can actually feel it in the hallways."
Worthman and Edwards encourage everyone to come and enjoy a fun afternoon becoming a rainbow.
"It's a day that families can get together, get full of colour, and get some healthy exercise. Come support our school and our students," exclaimed Worthman.
Registration can be done on the school's website, or for more information, contact Edwards and Worthman at 780-826-3323.
