The big screen is coming to the Lakeland in a big way.
Moments in Spacetime is a unique family drama inspired by producer Patty Srisuwan's own personal experiences as an immigrant living in Canada.
"This girl was adopted into a North American culture when she’s about 12-years-old, and not long after that, the family had their own child,” explained Srisuwan.
The main character, Macie, takes care of their grandfather who suffers from Alzheimer's.
"They’re a very interesting and odd pair, but they have more in common than they know,” Srisuwan detailed.
The film dives into Macie's life where she lives half in one world and half in another.
Srisuwan and Cowden hope the the film brings a unique perspective on the topic of immigration "in a way that viewers have not yet seen."
Srisuwan continued, “The important thing is, it’s reflecting so many families and their situations in society these days... We have a lot of immigrants coming in from so many countries and people move around a lot, even Canadians move to other countries. I think all-in-all, I believe people will experience so many things."
According to Srisuwan, the movie will be filmed mostly in the Lakeland, with a primary focus on Cold Lake.
“We love the scenery, the nature, it’s beautiful,” she expressed. “I think the Lakeland people are ready to explore something interesting, and I hope this film is an example for a movie in Hollywood that would have an interest in this area."
Although most of the film is being shot locally, a small portion will be filmed in Edmonton and Jasper.
After reading the script, Srisuwan and fellow producer Tyler Duffy "fell in love with it."
“We thought we should bring it to life,” Srisuwan added.
They're current in the pre-production stages, but plan on starting to film at the end of May and beginning of April.
All Srisuwan asks is for the public to welcome their crews and their stars, who have played roles in Hollywood films, with open arms.
Srisuwan wouldn't reveal who will be in the movie, but admitted they were well-known for other characters they've played.
Overall, Srisuwan is excited to get started.
“This is an exciting and new opportunity for the area," she said, adding they can't wait to bring Moments in Spacetime to the big screen.
“(Viewers) will be able to relate to this movie and understand it. I think this film and script are pointing out so many social issues that I think are relevant to today."
