BONNYVILLE – On the same day Station 5 firefighters responded to a grass fire within the MD of Bonnyville, a Fire Advisory has been put into place by the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA) that takes effect as of April 28.

The areas included under the Fire Advisory are the MD of Bonnyville, Summer Village of Bonnyville Beach, Summer Village of Pelican Narrows and Village of Glendon.

The decision was influenced in part by a Fire Advisory that was put in place at the provincial level affecting Alberta’s Forest Protection Areas on April 27, Regional Fire Chief Dan Heney told Lakeland This Week.

However, with a shift from cool and rainy weather to warm and windy weather, the decision was made to initiate an advisory.

Shortly after 9:45 a.m. on April 28, crews from Station 5 Bonnyville responded to a grass fire in a ditch along Township Road 610 and Range Road 455.

While existing fire permits are still allowed during a Fire Advisory, no new fire permits will be issued for non-essential heavy burning, states information provided by the BRFA.

Burn Barrels with screens, fire pits, fireworks and safe campfires continue to be permitted.

“We expect this fire advisory to reduce the number of human-caused wildfires in Alberta, while allowing Albertans to enjoy outdoor activities as much as possible,” states the BRFA.

Residents are asked to monitor fire advisories and bans at www.albertafirebans.ca daily for any updates or changes.
