Fire Ban and OHV Restriction put in place for Bonnyville and area

The Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority has issued a Fire Ban as well as an off-highway vehicle (OHV) restriction to take effect as of May 5. A list of activities now prohibited are included.

BONNYVILLE – A Fire Ban as well as an off-highway vehicle (OHV) restriction has been issued for the MD of Bonnyville, Summer Village of Bonnyville Beach, Summer Village of Pelican Narrows and the Village of Glendon. 

The Fire Ban and OHV restriction implemented by the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA) took effect as of May 5. 

“Existing fire permits are cancelled, and no new fire permits will be issued,” states the BRFA. 

Under a Fire Ban it is important to note what is now prohibited. 

What is prohibited: 

• All open fires including campfires, backcountry and random camping areas and backyard fire pits and burn barrels.  

• Charcoal briquettes, turkey fryers, tiki torches, and fireworks.  

• The use of off-highway vehicles for recreational use on all public lands.  

What is allowed: 

• Portable propane fire pits that are CSA approved or UL certified.  

• Gas or propane stoves and barbecues that are CSA approved or UL certified and are designed for cooking or heating.  

• Catalytic or infrared-style heaters.  

• Fires contained in industrial facilities or on industrial sites as approved by a forest officer.  

The OHV Restriction does allow:  

• Indigenous people for traditional use.  

• Commercial / industrial operations which require OHV.  

• Agricultural use.  

• Use on private land.  

The BRFA first implemented a Fire Advisory on April 28. Just four days later the advisory was upgraded to a Fire Restriction.
