A man wielding a knife and a baseball bat during an assault was sentenced to 75 days in custody.

"It was a fairly dramatic fight," described Crown prosecutor Tyler McLean during Riel Keith Paul's appearance in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse on Tuesday, June 4.

Paul pleaded guilty to two counts of breaching probation, assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and failing to attend court.

He was sentenced by Honourable Judge Cheryl Arcand-Kootenay to 75 days globally for the offences.

On May 25, 2018, Bonnyville RCMP were called to a Kehewin Cree Nation residence around 9:15 p.m. in relation to an intoxicated male with a baseball bat.

Paul was found altercating with another male. In one hand he had a baseball bat, while in the other, he held a knife.

According to the complainant, although there were no injuries, Paul had hit the victim on the head multiple times.

McLean said officers described Paul as "grossly intoxicated," at the time.

After serving 87 pre-trial days in custody, Paul was released on time-served.

Paul was also sentenced to a three-year weapons prohibition and must provide a sample of his DNA for the national databank.
