Blood found at the scene of the crime led police to the culprits of a break and enter outside of town.
On Aug. 29, 2018, RCMP responded to the report of a break-in at a Muriel Creek Subdivision property.
The suspects broke into the building by cutting through a screen and prying the bars on the window. Their goal was to steal a quad inside.
When police arrived, the quad was missing, however, blood found inside of the building led officers to their suspects: Kevin Frances Cardinal and Alfred Daniel LaPratt.
Cardinal appeared in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse on Tuesday, May 7 from the Edmonton Remand Centre via CCTV, and pled guilty to housebreaking.
Honourable Judge Clifton Purvis sentenced the Kehewin male to 90 days in custody, plus a period of probation, which includes conditions to keep the peace, be of good behaviour, have no contact with co-accused LaPratt, abide by a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew, attend treatment specifically in relation to addictions, have no weapons, and not be found within 500-metres of the property broken into.
Cardinal must also provide a sample of his DNA for the national databank.
This was Cardinal's first property-related offence, noted Crown prosecutor Tyler McLean.
"At some point maybe we have to consider sentencing for general deterrence," expressed Purvis before agreeing to the joint submission.
As of his sentencing, Cardinal had 43 days left to serve.
LaPratt adjourned his matters to May 28.
