A 32-year-old Fort Kent woman is in serious but stable condition after being struck by a drunk driver on Sunday night while walking along a street in Fort Kent.

The woman was out for her nightly walk with a 42-year-old woman when they were both struck by a vehicle and sent into a ditch.

Before authorities arrived on scene the 42-year-old female had provided first aid to the 32-year-old female while witnessing the driver throw beer cans out of his vehicle.

The 32-year-old female was transported to Bonnyville hospital before being flown by STARS air ambulance to Edmonton. According to local RCMP she has received one surgery and is in stable condition while awaiting more surgery.

The 42-year-old female was also taken to Bonnyville hospital and treated for minor injuries before being released.

The driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, a 44-year-old male resident of Bonnyville was arrested after being found to have a blood alcohol level almost three times the legal limit.

He is currently in police custody and faces charges for impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and dangerous driving of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

The investigation is ongoing until police can determine the full extent of all the injuries suffered in the collision.

The male will remain in police custody until his first court appearance on April 7 in Bonnyville.
