Elk Point steers named Grand and Reserve 4-H champions at District Show and Sale

A long day of careful deliberations came to an end on June 5, when conformation judge Lance Leachman of Maidstone, Sask. chose the St. Paul District 4-H Grand and Reserve Champion steers from a group of 14 head selected from seven weight classes.

ST. PAUL – A long day of careful deliberations came to an end last Monday evening when conformation judge Lance Leachman of Maidstone, Sask. chose the St. Paul District 4-H Grand and Reserve Champion steers from a group of 14 head selected from seven weight classes.

Both winners came from the heaviest weight class, Elk Point 4-H Beef Club senior members Cloey Germain with the 1,657-pound Grand Champion and Tyson Kotowich with the 1,553-pound Reserve Champion. Other finalists whose steers were chosen from the weight classes were fellow Elk Point members Emma May Nelson, Luke Germain and Zack Germain, Courtney Werstiuk, Ethan Yaremko, Emily Yaremko, Brielle Lavoie, Kurt Yaremko and Kale Lavoie of the St. Paul 4-H Multi Club, Ryder Jodoin of the St. Lina 4-H Beef Club, Goodridge 4-H member Caleb Hofer and Boscombe 4-H member Maddisen Wirsta.

Cloey Germain’s steer, the reserve champion in Elk Point’ club show, sold for an even $6 per pound to Kotowich Evergreen Farms while the Kotowich steer, named grand champion in that show, sold for $7.20 per pound to Black Gold Simmentals of Paradise Hill, Sask. and Bullseye Feeds of Strathmore, Alta.

A total of 70 other steers in the show sold for prices ranging from $2.75 to $9.50 per pound, with six purchasers donating their steers to Haying in the 30s Cancer Support Society, as were the proceeds from the sale of the final steer of the night, raised and followed around the sale ring by the entire Goodridge 4-H Club for that charity, selling for $3.75 per pound.

Groups of five steers from each club were judged by Leachman earlier in the day, with Elk Point placing first and St. Paul second. Another win came from calculations following the weighing in of each steer on arrival, with Hayden Feland of St. Lina taking home the Rate of Gain win for a 1,514-pound finished steer that gained 3,76 pounds per day on feed.

Showmanship and grooming competitions brought wins in both for Senior member Emily Yaremko, with Luke Germain second in showmanship and his sister Cloey third in showmanship an second in grooming, Taiten Reszel, St. Paul, placing third in grooming. In the Intermediate age group, Ethan Yaremko placed first in both, withy Zack Germain second in showmanship, Nate Reszel, St. Paul, second in grooming and Kurt Yaremko second in both. Junior Lennox St. Arnault, Boscombe, placed first in showmanship and third in grooming, Kaycee Feland, St. Lina second and Hudson Brousseau, Elk Point, third in showmanship, Brielle Lavoie, St. Paul, first and Jase Feland, St. Lina, second in grooming.

All three age groups also had their turn at judging. The junior division saw Payslee Trefanenko, St. Paul place first, Lennox St. Arnault second and Caleb Hofer third, while in the intermediate group, Ethan Yaremko was first, Dagne St. Arnault, Boscombe, second and Shyanne Klatt, Elk Point, third. Lexee Smith, Elk Point, topped the senior judges, with Emily Yaremko second and Ashley Lecopoy, Elk

Point, third. The Club Judging competition was won by St. Paul, with Elk Point second and Boscombe third.

Another set of judging was done by St. Paul –Smoky Lake Community Futures, with Penny Fox checking out the stall displays of each club and announcing Elk Point as the first place winner, Boscombe coming second and Goodridge third.
