ELK POINT - St. Paul Regional Family and Community Support Services brought their Seniors Week celebration to Elk Point on Thursday. The event included an excellent crowd enjoying a hot dog lunch with all the trimmings, after a welcome message by Brenda Billo and an entertaining visit by Elk Point Elementary School’s Grade 3 students.

Students from F. G. Miller High School were also involved in the event, welcoming the seniors and serving coffee and ice cream.

Karen Hudson of the Lakeland Primary Care Network was the featured speaker, with a focus on the mental health of seniors, and ways to keep the mind active and memory loss at bay. She spoke on the differences between normal aging and dementia and on memory loss, with its different levels, and on the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Games and activities were on hand, and both sides of the hall were lined with booths offering information on everything from seniors-oriented courses available through Community Adult Learning Programs (CALP) to the Alberta Brain Injury Network.

Following a game where seniors guessed the names of movies from quotes from their dialogue, participants were invited to fill out a questionnaire that included voting on where they would like to see this year’s Seniors Festival take place, followed by prize draws.
