The campaign to build a playground at Vera Welsh Elementary School has made it over the halfway line.

The Active Kids Society raised over $30,000 at two NHL playoff viewing parties this week, putting their fundraising total at around $250,000, about $200,000 away from their $453,000 goal.

"It's incredible, it's awesome," said Active Kids organizer Jen Okrainec. "We were very excited about it. We basically tried to rally our troops, and we're glad they included us.

"I think it helped raise awareness of our project."

Donations at the events included $20,000 from the Lac La Biche Firefighters Society's Santa's Helpers programs, $1,000 from Tarrabain Motors, $5,300 from Cougar Fuels and $500 from Rets Contracting.

Okrainec said that the monies raised so far go to base construction costs, and that in-kind donations could help chip away from the remaining $200,000.

"Every little bit helps," she said.
