Camp teaches kids fundamental volleyball skills

The junior volleyball skills camp was held at the Bold Centre from Aug. 6-9.

LAC LA BICHE - Summer is not only a time for kids to take a break from their studies, but also to brush up on their athletic skills in preparation of the upcoming school sports season.

This past week, that’s what a group of around 24 local youngsters aged 9-13 were doing at a junior volleyball skills camp that was held at the Bold Centre from Aug. 6-9.

Braden Reid, a recreation programmer with Lac La Biche County, explained that the training camp, which is held annually, focuses on fundamental volleyball skills such as passing, serving, attacking, offense, defense, as well as game play.

The camp, Reid continued, allows youngsters to stay active over the summer and learn about a sport that many students will be playing during the upcoming school season. Many of these kids, he added, are young and haven’t played a lot of volleyball before.

“I think it’s really good for them to get out here, try a sport that maybe they haven’t played before, one that, you know, a lot of people do like to play all throughout high school…I know I did…I played a lot of volleyball,” he told Lakeland Today. “So, these kinds of camps are great to get kids out and active at the very least.”
