LAC LA BICHE - On the afternoon of Aug. 14, a fire restriction that had been lifted just over a week earlier for Lac La Biche County was put back into effect.
According to Lac La Biche County, the municipality moved to a fire restriction due to recent warm, dry conditions and to keep in line with the provincial government.
While this restriction is in effect, fire permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis and outdoor fires for cooking or warmth are permitted in safe fire pits only.
“As always, it is important to fully extinguish any fires and obey all current fire restrictions,” according to information from Lac La Biche County.
On July 31, the County moved from a fire ban to a fire restriction. This came four days after the municipality lifted a ban that had been put in place that prohibited the operation of Off Highway Vehicles (OHVs) on public land within the County’s Fire permitting area.
As of Aug. 14, the Wildfire Danger Index for the Lac La Biche region is listed as "Very High."
According to the Alberta Wildfire Status Dashboard, there are 121 active wildfires burning in the province. This includes carryover wildfires but not mutual aid.
Ten of these fires are in the Lac La Biche Forest Protection area. Four of the fires are categorized as being out of control, and six others are listed as under control.
