LAC LA BICHE – On May 10, a group of young people from the Lac La Biche area were able get a ride in an airplane while also getting schooled in the art of aviation during an event that took place at the Lac La Biche Airport.
According to Dale Gauthier, president of the Lac La Biche Flying Club, 27 children and youth aged eight to 18 participated in a brief ground school with pilot Boyd Harrison before taking to the skies with some club members who are also pilots.
“Participants learned about the principles of flight, the importance of safety, and the various career paths available within aviation, all while enjoying the breathtaking views from the skies above Lac La Biche,” Gauthier said.
The members of the Lac La Biche Flying Club were thrilled to play a part in the program, which is called Discover Aviation and is spearheaded by The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA).
Gauthier explained that COPA's Discover Aviation program has made significant strides in introducing people to the world of aviation. A total of 36,340 individuals having participated in the experience as of the end of 2023.
“This initiative offers free introductory flights, which are made possible through the generous contributions and dedication of COPA members,” explained Gauthier.
The Lac La Biche Flying Club has hosted the Discover Aviation program in the past.
Currently, the pilot industry in Canada is experiencing a high number of retirements, and more trained pilots are needed to fill these roles, says Gauthier.
“The program not only aims to spark interest in aviation among the general public but also seeks to inspire the next generation of pilots, engineers, and aviation enthusiasts,” he said.
