The Lac La Biche Lakers, the community’s newest sports franchise and a member of the independent National Junior Hockey League (NJHL), hosted the first of a series of youth hockey camps that will take place throughout August at the Bold Center.

The camp for U7/U9 level players ran from Aug. 5-8. The U11 camp is Aug. 12-15 while the U13/U15 group is Aug. 26-29. The camps include both off-ice and on-ice training.

Tyr Thompson, head coach of the Lakers, whose season is set to begin in early October, said officials with the organization will be going over skills that they think will be helpful for the players in the upcoming hockey season.

These skills include passing, power skating, shooting, and stickhandling. Furthermore, Thompson added, participants play games during the off-ice portion.

The hockey skills camps, Thompson continued, are a great opportunity for minor hockey players wanting to move up and eventually play junior hockey for the Lac La Biche Lakers. Every player who attends the camp, he said, receives a Lakers youth jersey to keep. There are also prizes awarded to the hardest working player every day.

“We want to have the support of the community and that starts with having local players on the team,” he told Lakeland This Week. “We have local players signed to the roster for the upcoming season so there is opportunity for local youths to come play for the Lakers later in their hockey career and they will have an advantage because they will know what the team expects from being at our camp.”
