LAC LA BICHE – Abigail Britton is a Grade 9 student at JA Williams (JAWS) High School who is already achieving impressive honours for the works she’s been doing in the community.
Britton was recently named as a recipient of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Student Award.
“I feel like it’s a huge personal accomplishment,” said Britton. “I was really proud of myself, and it felt good to know that people think I’m a good kid.”
According to information from Northern Lights Public Schools (NLPS), Britton was one of nine students across the province who were selected to receive the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Student Award.
The accolade, which is presented annually by the Alberta School Boards' Association (ASBA), honours students who demonstrate outstanding growth, resilience, and a strong commitment to learning and helping others.
After being notified by NLPS staff that she had been chosen, Britton travelled to Edmonton on June 9 for the ceremony, where she met with the other recipients, representatives of the ASBA, as well as Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Salma Lakhani.
During the event, Britton had the opportunity to meet Lakhani, who offered her words of encouragement.
“She just said I’m very deserving of the award and to keep working hard,” said Britton. “The Lieutenant Governor was really sweet, and the food and the whole experience was amazing.”
Lakhani spoke to the recipients during the ceremony, stating that the accomplishments of the young Albertans are truly inspiring.
“Through resilience, compassion and a steadfast commitment to learning and service, each of these students has made a meaningful impact in their schools and communities,” said Lakhani. “Their leadership, humility and dedication remind us of the extraordinary potential within the next generation - and offer great hope for the future of our province.”
Britton was nominated by JAWS assistant principal Matt White, who praised the youth for her endeavours.
“Abigail’s infectious smile, positive energy, and unwavering kindness have made her well-known and well-loved by both students and staff,” White said. “She brightens every room, builds others up, and leads with quiet confidence and compassion. Her leadership, work ethic, and genuine care for others make her an ideal candidate for this award.”
Britton is actively involved in various pursuits both at school and in the community. She is part of the JAWS Interact Club where she helps with local initiatives such as the annual seasonal-themed ‘Cruisin’ for Christmas’ event and also visits seniors’ residences in the Lac La Biche area. She plays on the school’s volleyball team, is a member of the students’ union, and is involved with dance.
“I love volunteering, especially going to the old folks’ homes,” she said. “Some of them don’t have many people who visit, and they can get really lonely. I think it’s so cool to hear their stories and build relationships with them.”
As far as Britton’s plans after graduating from high school in a few years, those have yet to be determined. However, she knows she eventually wants to have a career that will allow her to help people.
