Sled Races back on the Lake for this weekend

After a week of searching for a location to house the popular snowmobile drag races, organizers on Tuesday agreed to put them back onto Lac La Biche Lake — but nearer the shoreline.

The decision was made to reduce the events of the annual Winter Festival of Speed because of over-flow water on the lake's ice surface. The snowmobile races have avoided cancellation by being a straight and narrow operation.
While the ice is still more than a foot and a half thick in all areas of the 22--plus square kilometre lake, organizers said the ice near the shoreline is better for the straight-line sled races.
The races are scheduled to start at Noon. There will be lots of public parking on the ice and on shore. The racers will be coming from across Western Canada to blast down the 600-foot, four-lane track.
There are categories for local racers as well, with registration for more than 25 events starting at 9 a.m.
