State of local emergency declared by Lac La Biche County due to out of control wildfire

A wildfire that is burning out of control in the Winefred Lake area, northwest of Cold Lake and northeast of Lac La Biche, has resulted in Lac La Biche County declaring a state of local emergency and an evacuation order being put in place, June 4.

LAC LA BICHE - A wildfire that is burning out of control in the Winefred Lake area, northwest of Cold Lake and northeast of Lac La Biche, has resulted in Lac La Biche County declaring a state of local emergency and an evacuation order being put in place.

The Caribou Lake Wildfire (LWF090) is burning out of control and is an estimated 62,768 ha in size, according to the Government of Alberta.

"Alberta Wildfire had crews working overnight on the northwest side of the wildfire. Today, crews will continue to focus on the north and south sides of the wildfire, which are the closest to infrastructure," reads a provincial statement on June 4.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has put an evacuation alert in place for the hamlet of Conklin.

Alex Fuller, interim communications lead with Lac La Biche County, stated that "a mandatory evacuation order has been issued for the area of southern Winefred Lake and Grist Lake . . . and all members of the public are required to leave the area immediately due to an out-of-control wildfire."

A post made on Wednesday afternoon at about 3 p.m. by Lac La Biche County also stated "The council of Lac La Biche County declares that a State of Local Emergency exists in the County as of today, June 4, 2025."

"Due to an out-of-control wildfire threatening the Winefred Lake area, the public is advised that for the duration of the emergency, the local authority, Lac La Biche County, may take any and all action it deems necessary to deal with the situation."
