The wild-west entertainment that warmed the hearts of America more than a century ago is headed straight for Elk Point next week, with just a few tickets left for the six rip-roaring performances as Elk Point Community Choir and Friends present Annie Get Your Gun.

The irrepressible Annie Oakley, Wild Bill Hickok and the whole gang will be on stage at the Elk Point Arts and Leisure Centre on March 18, 19, 25, 26 and April 1 and 2 to perform the western musical for close to 1,800 dinner theatre patrons,

This is “the 18th, I think,” year of dinner theatre for the choir, according to president Don Conrad, and over the years, the group’s fame has spread “to bring people from Calgary, Lac La Biche, the Saskatchewan border and lots from Edmonton” to the annual shows, some of them coming by the busload.

Conrad reports that last week saw a number of volunteers, including “some not even involved with the choir, such as Adam Smereka and John Wozniak,” busy building sets for the play, “because they just enjoy doing it. That’s a real help to us.”

Putting on six nights of dinner theatre – the group has been known to have a nine-show run in the past – is a huge undertaking, but it’s one that the choir enjoys immensely, Conrad says. “It’s such a community thing, and it’s very rewarding. We’d never give it up.”
