ST. PAUL - A blue-green algae warning has been put in place for Lac Santé, which located between St. Paul and Two Hills.

A blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom has been identified in areas of the lake, according to Alberta Health Services. Residents living near the shores of this lake, as well as visitors to this lake, are advised to take precautions.

AHS recommends avoiding all contact with blue-green algae blooms. The advisory recommends people and pets stay out of the water where algae is visible.

And as with other blue-green algae warnings, people should consider limiting human consumption of whole fish and fish trimmings from the lake.

"Blue-green algae is naturally occurring, and often becomes visible when weather conditions are calm," according to AHS. "People who come in contact with visible blue-green algae or who ingest water containing blue-green algae may experience skin irritation, rash, sore throat, sore red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea and vomiting and/or diarrhea."

The advisory also states that exposure to the bacteria can be fatal to pets. The advisory is in place until further notice.
