BONNYVILLE - On July 6, Bonnyville RCMP received a complaint at 2:45 p.m. of an intoxicated man that had reportedly entered a Kehewin store and began harassing and yelling at customers.

“He had a hammer and was threatening staff and customers in the store,” states an RCMP press release.

Bonnyville RCMP were dispatched and located the man standing outside the store with the hammer.

“RCMP instructed him to drop the hammer, but he refused and raised it toward them, all the while yelling and swearing at the members,” says RCMP.

He eventually dropped the hammer but when members arrested him, he allegedly continued to resist by punching and kicking at the members.

“He was eventually handcuffed without further incident and no injuries were sustained,” continues RCMP.

Once in handcuffs, the man allegedly indicated he would “use the knife in his pocket and stab the member.”

Officers subsequently located a box cutter knife in his front pocket, according to the RCMP.

Darren Night, a 50-year-old from Kehewin, is charged with assault on a police officer, uttering threats, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and mischief under $5,000.

Night was brought before a Justice of the Peace for a bail hearing where he was released without having to pay any cash.

Night’s court date is set for Aug. 2.
