Christmas at Ferguson Flats

Ferguson Flats may not even be a dot on the map these days, with the 1911 store and post office that once was the centre of a growing pioneer community now just a paragraph in the local history book.

Now all that remains from those earlier days is the lovingly restored pioneer Fern Chapel School and a newer schoolhouse that became a community hall when one-room schools were consolidated in the1950s, and that’s enough for today’s residents, many of them descendants of the families who settled the area in the early 1900s.

That small community hall was packed to the rafters on Dec. 20 for the Ferguson Flats Association’s annual Christmas party, which featured a huge potluck supper, games, music and a much-anticipated visit from Santa.

This is one of two major events held each year at the hall northeast of Elk Point, along with a big family picnic at the end of June, but smaller events, from the upcoming series of whist drives to the County of St. Paul and Elk Point FCSS annual outdoor movie night in August, keep the community entertained throughout the year
