A junior varsity high school basketball tournament saw both boys' and girls' teams take to the court in St. Paul.

ST. PAUL - The cheering fans roared in the St. Paul Regional High School gymnasium as junior varsity basketball teams from across the Lakeland took to the court on Feb. 11, during the school's Junior Varsity Home Tournament.

The high school tournament saw both boys' and girls' teams from Barrhead Composite High School, Bonnyville Centralized High School, École Mallaig School, J.A. Williams High School (Lac La Biche), Lloydminster Comprehensive High School, and St. Paul Regional High School, compete.

All teams were guaranteed three games, according to Noah Shankowski, one of the tournament's organizers and also a teacher at St. Paul Regional. He said that for St. Paul Regional, the boys' junior varsity team walked away with a 1-2 record, winning their game against J.A. Williams, playing a "close game with Barrhead," and then taking a loss against Lloydminster.

On the other side, the St. Paul girls' team had three wins and one loss, beating Mallaig, Lloydminster, and Bonnyville teams, and losing by only four points to Barrhead.

"It's great to have everybody out," said Shankowski, after the tournament. "I love the sport. That's why we put so much effort into this because we want to see basketball being played and grow in our community."
