ST. PAUL – Families enjoyed sun and fun activities during the Cabane à Sucre or "Sugar Shack" event held just outside the centre communautaire in St. Paul on March 19.

The Cabane à Sucre is a tradition deeply rooted in the French-Canadian culture, according to Ernest Piquette, vice-president of ACFA Régionale de Saint-Paul, the group that hosted the event.

"The Cabane à Sucre is a festivity to celebrate the [maple syrup] harvest that they've done [in Quebec]... and so they get together, and they have the taffy on the snow."

Activities like log sawing, nail pounding, and wagon rides were also part of the event. The traditional sleigh rides were replaced by wagon rides due to weather conditions. French-Canadian foods like pea soup and sugar pies were also enjoyed.

"What we try to do here is give the community, not only the francophones, but the whole community an opportunity to live a little bit of the Francophone culture and activities done many years ago," said Piquette. He expressed his gratitude to the community for attending the event.
