ELK POINT - Elk Point residents will have an opportunity to give their input on proposed stormwater drainage improvements, and will receive a questionnaire with a list of the 10 planned improvements that will reduce flooding and drainage issues.

The questionnaire and planned improvements are the result of a comprehensive study undertaken for the Town of Elk Point, and information gathered at an open house earlier this year, as well as field surveys and computer modelling.

The locations with potential to experience drainage issues have since been studied and resulted in the proposal of improvements that range from the construction of dry ponds in the Highway 42 green space and upgrading of culverts have been suggested to significantly reduced flooding frequency and severity in the industrial area near the town’s south boundary.

Construction of curb and gutter at the 46 St. and 50 Ave. intersection, with the upgrade of stormwater pipe and inlets, has also been suggested to direct stormwater through a controlled flood path to avoid flooding private property.

Reconstruction of a ditch along the south edge of the school’s sports field and construction of a new ditch north of the arena will eliminate the safety hazard posed by the steep side slopes of the existing ditches in those areas.
