Metis Week flag ceremony raises awareness

Tansi. Welcome to Metis Week

LAKELAND - To recognize Métis Week, which runs from Nov. 10 to 16, Portage College president Nancy Broadbent was joined by Métis Nation of Alberta leaders, community elders, Indigenous business representatives, and Lac La Biche County council members to raise a ceremonial Metis flag at the college's Lac La Biche campus on Thursday.

Elder Elmer Ghostkeeper, MNA Region 1 President James Cardinal, Region 2 Vice President Andrea Sandmaier, Broadbent, Lac La Biche County Mayor Omer Moghrabi, deputy mayor Colin Cote, and Resource One Aboriginal Business Association vice-president George L'Heureux gathered at the college entrance to raise the flag and speak about the importance of keeping Métis culture alive.

There was also a fire burning, symbolizing rebirth and moving forward as a Metis Nation.

We will have a full interview from the event and some of the activiites planned for Metis Week at the college in the coming days.
