The temperatures in the region have seen an upswing in recent days, but Lac La Biche County peace officers want motorists to remember that it's still winter.
"We want to remind people that it is still winter and the weather can turn fast resulting in deteriorating road conditions," says Lac La Biche County's Manager of Protective Services Chris Clark.
The month of February continues to be an awareness month for safe winter driving habits.
"Drivers need to reduce their speed, watch for deteriorating road conditions, ensure that they have checked road conditions and are prepared for adverse weather," he said, adding that local officers remind motorists to plan ahead when they travel. "Drivers need to plan ahead and make sure they have a shovel, appropriate clothing, emergency triangles or other warning device, a flashlight, cell phone charger and that there vehicle is in safe mechanical condition."
Officials are also cautioning motorists about unseen dangers. During the winter months, snow and ice buildups can clog exhaust systems in vehicles. In recent years, there have been several incidents in the region where occupants in vehicles have been exposed to dangerous carbon monoxide levels.
"Make sure there is no snow build up around the exhaust of the vehicle as this can cause an accumulation of carbon monoxide build up inside the vehicle," Clark said, explaining that the current cautions are important reminders for the next several weeks. Even though the calendar says that Spring is just a month and a half away, Mother Nature has a tendency to mix things up at this time of year, he said.
"Storms can make huge impacts in our travels and cause significant issues."
