RCMP investigate copper wire theft from La Corey oilfield site

Over the last week, Bonnyville RCMP responded to reports of vandalism and theft at an oilfield site in La Corey. Police also attended an alleged assault with a hammer that involved a Bonnyville man who had been arrested last week in relation to an assault with bear spray.

BONNYVILLE – Bonnyville RCMP received a report of vandalism at an oilfield site near La Corey on Jan. 25. 

According to RCMP, unknown culprit(s) allegedly damaged the property while accessing and stealing copper wire from the La Corey site.   

Anyone with knowledge of this or any other copper wire theft in the area is urged to contact the Bonnyville RCMP.  

No further information has been provided by RCMP on this matter or other copper wire thefts in the area. 

Assault with a hammer 

During the noon hour on Jan. 23, Bonnyville RCMP were dispatched to a residence for a reported disturbance on the west end of town in the area of 66 St. between 48 Ave. and 50 Ave.   

Further investigation by RCMP determined that a 35-year-old man from Bonnyville had allegedly threatened another man with a hammer.   

The male suspect was located and charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats and two counts of failing to comply with a release condition, according to RCMP. 

RCMP noted that the Bonnyville man arrested in relation to the assault with a hammer had been apprehended and released by a Justice of the Peace the week prior following an arrest where he had been accused of assaulting another victim with bear spray

The accused has been remanded in custody until his original court appearance, which is set for Feb. 15 at the Bonnyville Provincial Court.   

Public disturbance 

At about noon on Jan. 21, Bonnyville RCMP received a report of an aggressive man at business on Main Street who was allegedly causing a disturbance by yelling at customers and taking items off the shelves.   

Staff at the business had reportedly removed him but the man kept returning inside the store, according to RCMP.  

“A member attended and immediately identified the male and knew him to be on release conditions, that he was now breaching,” reads a statement released by the RCMP. 

The 34-year-old male from Bonnyville was arrested and charged with two counts of mischief and four counts of failing to comply with a release condition. He is set to appear in Bonnyville Provincial Court on Feb. 1.  

Breath sample twice the legal limit 

While on patrol, Bonnyville RCMP conducted a traffic stop on 50 Ave. with a driver that had failed to use his signal light when turning. 

“Upon approaching the driver, the member was able to determine that he was impaired,” states the press release.  

According to the RCMP, the man provided a breath sample of more than twice the legal limit and was criminally charged following the traffic stop at 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 21. 

He is scheduled to appear in Bonnyville Provincial Court on March 15.
