Smoky Lake man killed in Hwy 28 crash

SMOKY LAKE - A Smoky Lake man has been killed in a crash on Highway 28 involving a car and a semi-truck.

Smoky Lake RCMP say the collision happened on Feb. 7 at about 6 p.m. near the highway intersection with Range Road 162. The location is between Bellis and Smoky Lake, just south of the Edwand Church access. Police say the two vehicles had been travelling in opposite directions prior to the head on collision.

The driver of the car was killed in the crash. A female passenger in the same vehicle was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

The driver, and lone occupant, of the semi-tractor trailer, was not physically harmed.

RCMP redirected traffic for several hours around the crash. The roadway has since been opened to traffic.

Smoky Lake RCMP with the assistance of RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstruction continue to investigate the collision. Preliminary investigation indicates the car may have encroached into the opposing lane of travel occupied by the oncoming semi-tractor trailer.

No charges are expected. The name of the deceased will not be released.

The Edmonton office of the Chief Medical Examiner has scheduled an autopsy for a later date.

No further updates are anticipated.
