SPAA holds badminton championship, top players heading to zones

The St. Paul Athletic Association (SPAA) held its senior high badminton championships at Glen Avon School and St. Paul Regional High School on Friday, showcasing 118 athletes from the region. 

ST. PAUL – The St. Paul Athletic Association (SPAA) held its senior high badminton championships at Glen Avon School and St. Paul Regional High School on Friday, showcasing 118 athletes from the region. 

Claude Cote, a coach and teacher with Mallaig School as well as the SPAA commissioner for badminton, said the top players and teams will compete at the Northeast Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association zone tournament this week, in Lac La Biche. 

Following the championship, Cote said the day ran smoothly with little to no hiccups along the way. 

He also thanked all those who helped run the tournament, including volunteer coaches and students, as well as Glen Avon and St. Paul Regional for hosting the event. 

Cote expressed his well wishes to the athletes participating in the upcoming zone tournament. The top athletes will then get the chance to head to Alberta Schools' Athletic Association badminton provincials in early May. 

Junior results 

Boys Singles: Ayden Lapaschuk with Two Hills School won gold, Bo Dallaire with SPRHS won silver, and Carsyn Milot with Two Hills won bronze. 

Girls Singles: Koreana Weimer with SPRHS won gold, Rose Enriquez also with SPRHS won silver, and Ashley Lecopoy with FG Miller won bronze. 

Boys Doubles: Holden Kwiatkowski and Chris Feland with Glendon School won gold, Mikhylo Oszust and Jayden Bercier also with Glendon School took the silver, and Kaysen Young and Sam Atwal with SPRHS won bronze. 

Girls Doubles: Mirana Mandryk and Reanna Krahn with Two Hills won gold, followed by Ava Wilson and Alexa Labrie with SPRHS winning silver, and Daisy Steinbrecker and Ava Toma with Two Hills won bronze. 

Mixed Doubles: Paul Saskiw and Aubrey Sorochan with Two Hills School won gold, while Kayden Deschover and Addison Graling with SPRHS won silver, and Brayden Pinette and Chantelle Guerzon with FG Miller won bronze. 

Intermediate results 

Boys Singles: Konnor Poitras of FG Miller (FGM) won gold, Logan Lang with Two Hills School won silver, and Nicholas Penner with FG Miller won bronze. 

Girls Singles: Tanille Paradis with St. Paul Regional (SPRHS) took the gold medal, while Holly Feland with Glendon School won silver, and Allana Homeniuk with Two Hills School won bronze. 

Boys Doubles: Kade Fontaine and Sam Rogal with FG Miller won gold, while Nick Bromberger and Dalin Fejzullai with SPRHS won silver, and Jacob Jean and Ryan Songer also with SPRHS won bronze. 

Girls Doubles: Peyton deMoissac and Alayna Hladunewich with SPRHS won the gold, while Brooke Paradis and Gianna Wilson also with SPRHS won silver, and Jayci Marcoux and Rylee Warawa with FG Miller won silver. 

Mixed Doubles: Grace Burton and Brennan Riopel with SPRHS placed first, followed by Randall Langevin and Kaitlyn Foote with SPRHS for second, and Kiana Devlin and Ty Dechaine with Mallaig School winning bronze. 

Senior results 

Boys Singles: Kaleb Boetcher with Two Hills School won gold, Braden Kereliuk with Two Hills won silver, and Jackson Fontaine with SPRHS won bronze. 

Girls Singles: Jennie-Rose Goodwin with Ecole du Sommet won gold, Spencer Malachowski with FG Miller won silver, and Ella Ballas with FG Miller won bronze. 

Boys Doubles: Ashton Boyko and Jeremy Boyko with SPRHS won gold, while Daniel Wiebe and Anthony Poplonot won silver. There was no team for the bronze medal. 

Girls Doubles: Kayla Mangatal and Sydni Fedoruk with SPRHS won gold, Jorja Hagen and Victoria Voltner with Glendon School won silver, and Angela Jubinville and Naja VanBrabant with EDS won bronze. 

Mixed Doubles: Zachary Quinton and Caitlyn Quinton won gold, Aezron Alvarez and Maya Yakiwchuk (SPRHS) won silver, and Riley Kwiatkowski and Aliya Werstiuk with Glendon School won bronze. 

Most of the winning athletes have expressed their intent to play at the Zones, which will be held in Lac La Biche on April 26.
