Suspects charged following small explosion and house fire

VERMILION - Two suspects have been charged following a small explosion and a fire at a residence in the County of Vermilion River.

On Feb. 8, Vermilion RCMP responded to a call of suspicious activity at a residence on Twp Rd 490. 

"Upon arrival, responding officers observed a male and female suspect exiting the residence. As the suspects were leaving a small explosion occurred and the house became engulfed in flames," according to RCMP. "As a result of the explosion, one of the suspects was knocked to the ground."

Both suspects were immediately arrested and no responding officer or suspects were injured.

"Vermilion RCMP confirmed there were no occupants in the residence," according to a media release from RCMP.

After noticing several stolen items at the scene, a warrant was obtained to search the property.

"Vermilion RCMP and County of Vermilion River Fire Investigator continue to investigate and remain on the scene."

Charlene Young, 55 and Cody Nydokus, 50, are facing arson charges in relation to the incident.

"Both Young and Nydokus have had a judicial hearing and have been released with conditions. They are scheduled to attend court on Mar. 7, 2022 in Vermilion Provincial Court," according to police.

As this matter is before the court not further details can be released.
