UPDATE: RCMP confirm one dead in Vilna-area crash

Police have said that drugs may have been a factor in November 25 fatality crash on Highway 28

RCMP say an Edmonton woman was killed in a Nov. 25 crash on Highway 28 near Vilna.

VILNA - Smoky Lake RCMP are reporting that a 46-year-old female driver of one of three vehicles involved in a crash on Highway 28 last Friday died at the scene.

Emergency crews were called to a section of the Lakeland highway near Vilna in the early afternoon of Nov. 25, responding to reports of a three-vehicle collision.

Upon arrival, emergency responders confirmed a 46-year-old female from Edmonton, the driver of one of the vehicles, had been killed. A second driver involved in the collision was extricated from his vehicle and transported to Edmonton by STARS Ambulance with serious injuries. The third driver involved attended hospital with minor injuries.

RCMP diverted traffic around the crash scene for several hours, re-opening the highway the next morning. 

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision. Although early, in that investigation, RCMP have said that drugs are believed to be a factor. 

In a news statement issued Monday morning, RCMP officials expressed their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
