SMOKY LAKE - Aspen View Public Schools has already made the call to cancel buses for Monday, Feb. 8, due to the extreme cold that has blanketed the area.
"Due to extremely cold temperatures, all Aspen View Public Schools bus routes are cancelled for Monday, February 8, 2021. Schools will remain open," according to Ross Hunter, Communications Officer with Aspen View.
The school division oversees schools in the Vilna and Smoky Lake areas, along with the Athabasca area.
If parents choose to drive their children to school, they are asked to watch to ensure their children have physically entered the school before the parent leaves.
Almost the entire province is under some sort of weather alert according to the Environment Canada website.
For the Lakeland region, the extreme cold warning states wind chill values are expected to dip between -40C and -55C.
"This prolonged cold snap is expected to persist through the coming week for many areas of Alberta. There will be some moderation in temperature at times, typically during daylight hours," reads the weather alert.
When outdoors, "Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes."
Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially when there is wind.
