The St. Paul Desna Dance club hosted its annual festival on Saturday and Sunday and welcomed more than 1,150 dancers to the event. “We had a big increase this year,&” says Tannis Baerg, this year's festival chairperson.
The St. Paul Desna Dance club hosted its annual festival on Saturday and Sunday and welcomed more than 1,150 dancers to the event.
“We had a big increase this year,&” says Tannis Baerg, this year's festival chairperson. She said overall, the weekend went “very well.&”
“I'm proud of our club . . . it's just amazing how all our families come together,&” she said.
Eleven dance groups from St. Paul took part in the weekend event, each performing multiple dances. Some dancers also performed solos and duets.
Clubs from as far south as Lethbridge and as far north as Fort McMurray took part in the event, along with clubs from Elk Point, Myrnam and Vilna.
The two-day event involved a constant flow of dancers and spectators moving in and out of the All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Cultural Centre. Loud applause could be heard after each of the impressive performances that were showcased by dancers of all ages.
“There were lots of smiles and high fives,&” says Baerg.
The Ukrainian dance season is getting close to wrapping up. Some dancers are now done performing at festivals, although a few St. Paul dancers will keep going a little longer.
A spring concert is also set to take place Friday at 7 p.m.at the cultural centre, in St. Paul. Entry is $5 at the door.
