Hunters show off their best at Ashmont Buck of the Season

Ashmont's 43rd Annual Buck of the Season event brought an enthusiastic crowd of hunters and fans of hunting to the Ashmont Agriplex on Dec. 7.

ASHMONT – Ashmont's 43rd Annual Buck of the Season event brought an enthusiastic crowd of hunters and fans of hunting to the Ashmont Agriplex on Dec. 7, with a total of 65 entries brought in for measuring by head judge Neil Sapora and his very busy crew, 20 of the racks arriving in the final hour before the 3 p.m. deadline.

This is one more entry than last year, and one of the best entry totals to date.

As entries poured in, everyone had the opportunity to bid on a wide variety of donated silent auction items and to visit displays offering a huge variety of fishhooks, leather and fur mittens, archery supplies, baking and handicrafts and to enter their guesses for the measurement of a handsome mounted deer head, enjoy lunch from the concession and swap hunting stories with friends.

Once all the measuring was complete, the winners were:

Whitetail deer - Men’s Typical: James Mercier, 178 4/8; Men’s Non-Typical: T. J Rempel, 220 5/8; Ladies: Lindsay Rowe, 211 3/8; Youth: Tye Gargus, 173 7/8

Mule deer - Men’s Typical: Jason Miller, 179 3/8; Ladies: Becky Farkaska, 177 7/8; Youth: Ty Reszel, 184 3/8.
