A 23-year-old Saddle Lake man has been sentenced for dangerous driving, evading a police officer and for failing to provide a breath sample, after leading RCMP on a pursuit on the evening of Jan. 5.

RCMP were investigating a report of theft from a local liquor store when a member saw a suspect vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, west on Highway 29, and weaving in and out of traffic.

The officer caught up to the vehicle near the St. Brides intersection but had to continue to chase the suspect through the Saddle Lake reserve, before the truck lost traction and spun out, with three people arrested and two men eventually charged.

He also pled guilty to evading or failing to stop for a police officer, for which he received 33 days of custody and a surcharge of $200, as well as failure to provide a breath sample, for which he received a fine of $1,000 and a fine surcharge of $300. The fines are due on May 12.

Following the incident, 24-year-old Brent Robert Cardinal was charged with obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duties, resisting arrest, breach of release, and was also wanted for another five offences out of St. Paul. He failed to appear at his March 3 court appearance, and as of last week, a warrant was still out for his arrest.
