UPDATE: Smoky Lake school up to nine cases of COVID-19

H.A. Kostash School in Smoky Lake confirmed another case of COVID-19 on Tuesday.

UPDATE: An update sent out by Aspen View Public Schools notes that the school in Smoky Lake now has nine active COVID-19 cases connected to it. 

On Dec. 2, Aspen View was notified of another positive case of COVID-19 diagnosed in an individual associated with H.A. Kostash School. This is the ninth active case of COVID-19 currently connected to H.A. Kostash School.

"Ten students and four staff who had close contact with the most recent confirmed case have been directed to stay home. Anyone considered a close contact of a case of COVID-19 is contacted directly by Alberta Health Services with further direction," according to the school division.

SMOKY LAKE - As of Tuesday, H.A. Kostash School in Smoky Lake - which falls in the Aspen View Public Schools division - was reporting eight active cases of COVID-19 at the school.

On Monday evening, Aspen View was notified of an additional positive case of COVID-19 in an individual associated with H.A. Kostash School, according to information released on Dec. 1.

The latest cases resulted in nine students and four staff being directed to stay home, according to Aspen View. Anyone considered a close contact of a case of COVID-19 is contacted directly by Alberta Health Services (ASH) with further direction, reads the information.

The individual with COVID-19 was last in school on Nov. 25. No further details will be released, in order to protect the privacy of the individual.

The school division is reminding all parents and guardians, as well as staff, to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19. 

Ross Hunter, communications officer with Aspen View Public Schools, confirmed that eight active cases were now associated with H.A. Kostash School.

Trail Landing

On Sunday, a case was also confirmed at Landing Trail Intermediate School, in Athabasca.

"Thirty Landing Trail Intermediate School students and three staff who had close contact with the individual have been directed to stay home," reads a Nov. 29 media release from Aspen View.
