Students throughout the St. Paul Education Regional Division (SPERD) will be allowed to help the community gain votes in the national Kraft Hockeyville competition, taking place Sunday and Monday.

St. Paul’s CAP Arena is one of the top 10 finalists in the competition. But for the arena to have a shot at winning the coveted $100,000 prize for arena upgrades, and the opportunity to host a pre-season NHL game, a lot of votes will be needed by those living in, around, and outside of St. Paul.

At Wednesday’s regular school board meeting, Superintendent Glen Brodziak brought up a request from St. Paul Minor Hockey to allow students over the age of 13 to access computers and vote on Monday.

“It’s a worthwhile community project,” said Brodziak. The board agreed, passing a motion to send a letter home this week to parents to notify them of the opportunity for students to vote on Monday.

Brodziak clarified that voting will not take place during instructional time, but instead the schools will have computer labs open and available for students when they are not in class.

The letters will be sent out to surrounding communities too, since many kids come into St. Paul to play hockey and also benefit from the CAP arena.

Voting for the Kraft Hockeyville contest will take place on Sunday and Monday. The results from that round of voting will be announced on March 19 when the top two are revealed.

A second round of voting for the top two communities will take place March 20 and 21, with this year’s Kraft Hockeyville winner announced on April 2. Visit http://khv2016.ca/en/ to vote and get more information about the contest.
