Packed outdoor crowd helps choose chili champions

Friday's chili cook-off was described as a "much-needed party" after a long 16 months.

BONNYVILLE - With eager chili tasters lined up from half the length of Brosseau’s Department Store, across the intersection and up past the full length of TD Financial, Greg from G&C DJ Services announced Friday’s Bonnyville Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook-off was finally underway.

“It’s 16 months too long since we could all get together this, and there’s a lot of amazing chili being made. It’s a much-needed party that Bonnyville has been waiting for a long, long time, and it’s time to have a good time," he said.

The lineup was soon picking up their tasting bowls in return for donations to the Bonnyville SPCA and choosing which of nearly 20 varieties of chili to taste first, many also stopping at the lemonade stand to put out the fire that some of those spicy dishes could kindle on the taste buds.

Judges Town of Bonnyville Coun. Chad Colbourne, MD of Bonnyville Deputy Reeve Mike Krywiak, and chamber vice president Caitlyn Bush critiqued the mouthwatering options with help from the crowd, and after the votes were tallied up at the close of the contest, both the 'Sense'ational champion and Most Unusual trophies went to HOT 101.3 FM.

Canadian Natural Resources won the Team Spirit award, Lakeland Family Eyecare Bonnyville cooked up the Tastiest, the Dove Centre’s was declared Hot Stuff and the People’s Choice was ATCO’s offering of chili.
