ELK POINT – A request from Member of Parliament Shannon Stubbs for Town Council’s assistance in finding nominees for the King Charles III Coronation Medal instantly brought forth the name of the late Laverne Wilson. He spent decades as the chair of the Elk Point Municipal Library Board, in addition to his many years as an educator in Heinsburg, Frog Lake and Elk Point. Council agreed to submit a nomination.
Criteria for nominees include making significant contributions to Canada or achieving something outstanding aboard and being alive as of May 26, 2023, the date of King Charles III’s coronation, with posthumous nominations accepted. Wilson passed away on July 4, 2024 at the age of 87 years.
Members of Parliament across the country are able to nominate up to 20 individuals each.
Another honour for Wilson was on council’s Sept. 9 agenda, with council receiving a request that council ask the Elk Point Library Board to consider renaming the Elk Point Municipal Library in Wilson’s honour. Mayor Tung has contacted Wilson’s family with the proposal and will ask the Library Board for their approval, also informing the County of St. Paul of the proposed change.
